Should You Avoid Eating Candy Altogether for a Healthy Smile?

Is the only way to have a healthy smile by avoiding all types of sugar? Luckily, the answer for the vast majority of people is no, you do not have to avoid sugar altogether. Some people are going to get cavities any time they eat sugar, but those instances are incredibly rare.
For the rest of us, we simply need to make sure that we are taking good care of our mouths if we indulge in a little candy now and again. Here are some candy rules to follow if you want to keep your mouth as healthy as possible.
How to Keep Your Smile Healthy While Still Having Candy
The best way to make sure you are keeping your mouth as healthy as you can is to only indulge in candy now and again. Save this treat for special occasions. If you only have it sparingly, then you are far less likely to see any long-term negative effects.
You should also make sure to avoid any candy you must suck on. Having a piece of candy right up against any oral tissue for an extended period of time is more likely to cause problems than a chew up and swallow type of candy.
After eating a piece of candy, rinse your mouth out with some water. Then, after about a half hour, go brush your teeth. This removes any sweet residue that may be left by the candy so it does not linger on your teeth any longer than necessary.
For those of us with an extreme sweet tooth, make sure that you come in and get your cleanings done every six months without missing any appointments. This helps protect your teeth on a deeper level than the tips mentioned above. Call us for an appointment today!
