How Gum Disease Can Spread Between People

Posted on 2/15/2019 by WDG Office
How Gum Disease Can Spread Between PeopleAccording to research done by the CDC between 2009 and 2010, approximately 47.2% of adults here in America have mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis (gum disease).

What is gum disease?

It is inflammation of the gum line and can progress to affect the bone that supports and surround your teeth if not treated in time.

Some of the common symptoms are:

•  Swollen, red, tender gums
•  Bleeding of gums when flossing or brushing
•  Loose teeth
•  Persistent bad taste and breath

Here are the three ways that gum disease can spread between people.

Deep Kissing
A deep kiss results in the transfer of bacteria and germs that cause tooth decay, cold sores, and glandular fever from one person to another. Once in the mouth, the bacteria attach themselves to the gums and launch their harmful effects gradually.

Sharing of Beverages
Contrary to popular belief, sharing beverages such as soda or coffee contribute to spreading of gum disease. This is because the saliva is loaded with the bacteria that cause gum disease and other periodontal diseases.

Sharing of a Toothbrush

Dental health experts advise parents and guardians to make sure that each child has his or her toothbrush. Sharing of this essential personal item results in the transfer of germs and bacteria that later on cause gum disease.

Also, the toothbrush should be adequately rinsed after use to prevent the buildup of bacteria in-between the bristles. Note that the disease can recur if you continue using the same old toothbrush after being treated for gum disease.
