Tooth Loss and Diabetes Are Linked – What You Need to KnowFor many people with diabetes, dental health is a major concern, but others don't completely understand the connection between the disease and oral problems.

Diabetes is associated with tooth loss primarily among people with diabetes who are susceptible to periodontal disease. Otherwise known as gum disease, this condition includes gum infections, tissue loss, and inflammation.

Gum Disease is a Complication of Diabetes

Gum disease is a potentially serious complication of diabetes. About half of American adults have gum disease, and the prevalence of this disease is much higher among diabetics. As gum disease progresses, the gums start to pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the tooth. When the sensitive root is exposed, decay can progress to the inner nerve, causing death of the tooth. Ultimately, this may lead to tooth loss.

Glucose Control and Gum Disease

People with poor glucose control also struggle with oral health problems. Improper glucose regulation affects the body's defense against infections. Minor oral infections may worsen or linger, causing erosion and chronic inflammation. This is a problem among both adults and children with diabetes.

Tooth Loss Prevention

Losing teeth to gum disease doesn't have to be a part of your future, even if you have diabetes. Understanding the relationship between gum disease and diabetes is the first line of defense, and when coupled with a good oral care routine, you can prevent a problem. Be sure to brush at least twice per day and floss a minimum of one time per day. You should also replace your toothbrush every three months or at the first sign of wear.

If you have diabetes, regular dental cleanings are especially important. Give us a call today to set up your appointment, and make sure you let us know about your diabetes status. This information will help us to create the best treatment and maintenance plan for you.
